Reports of Chinese New Year celebrations----No.1

The first important event of 2012 Nottingham Chinese New Year Celebrations, co-hosted by Nottingham Confucius Institute and Art Centre, was held on Jan.18, 2012. This event features the exhibition of China image photographs taken by documentary photographers Mr Yuan-Hsiung Wang from Taiwan and his wife Miss Xue Qian from mainland. These photos will provide the audience with a unique experience of the magnificent landscape of South West China’s minority regions, and the diverse and rich cultures and traditions in China. The exhibition invites people to look closely to hear the whispers and chants of the minority people, feel their emotions,   understand their beliefs, and share their dreams.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham Professor David Greenaway delivered a speech on the ceremony. He praised the effort of Nottingham Confucius Institute and Art Center and expressed his best wishes to the two-week celebrations to meet the Year of Dragon. Also present at the ceremony are Pro-Vice-Chancellors professor Chris Rudd, Professor Yu Haisui, and Head of School of Contemporary Chinese Studies Professor Shujie Yao, as well as other distinguished guests.

Nottingham Confucius Institute also presented the guests with a show of Chinese tea ceremony, demonstrating on site how Chinese oolong tea, jasmine tea, green tea are made, inviting guests to have a try of the teas made. It attracted both Chinese and foreigners to come and drink. Many foreign guests showed great interest in Chinese tea culture and hope they can have more chances of sampling different Chinese teas.
In the coming two weeks, there will be more activities such as handcraft workshop, holiday parade, China paper-cutting, Taiji sessions, Calligraphy demonstration, firework show, Chinese dances workshop and so on.
